Someone had to do this, and it sure as hell wasn't going to be Adam. I breathed in and closed my eyes, only opening them as I exhaled and put one foot in front of the other. The key was hot from the heat of my body as it shook its way into the door knob. The metal clunked, and the wooden door swung open, leaving me staring at the empty room once filled with happiness. My eyes rushed over it as my mind flashed with memories, and my feet somehow continued in--all the way to Bobby's bedroom door. My chest constricted and stars popped in my vision as I swung it open. I found myself blinking rapidly as my eyes wandered the room, stopping on the dresser where frames contained pictures of Adam and me, Bobby and me, the three of us, and then Tara and Bobby. My feet yet again propelled me forward, but I stopped as I breathed in, choking on the air.
My body warmed as my chin trembled and I breathed in again.
There it was again.
Bobby. The room smelled like him.
My eyelashes fluttered against my cheeks as the scent encircled me. Bath and Body Works' Twilight Woods. The cologne we picked together when we were twelve. For fifteen years he'd worn it, even after Tara told him she hated it.
My eyes opened and moved to the hockey jersey hanging half out of a drawer--exactly where he left it that morning. My knees shook, and I found myself sitting on the bed staring at it. I reached forward, and the worn fabric embraced me as I brought it up to my chest. I pursed my lips together as the tears gathered and I pulled the jersey over my head, engulfing myself in his scent--it was embedded into this clothes despite constant washing. In my memories, his laughter carried through the room. It wasn't the first time I wore one of his jerseys. I closed my eyes and curled into a ball on his bed.
"So you remember it too?" Bobby's voice reached my ears, and the darkness behind my lids drifted away, parting until it was him and me in the tree house. I sat up on the bed, looking at him as he smirked at me from the edge of it. "See the thing is, I imagined it like this--you know? You practically naked;" his teeth ran over his bottom lip as his eyes ran up my legs, barely covered by my sleeping shorts. "in my jersey."
He moved forward and his hand cupped my chin as his thumb caught a tear. "You weren't crying in my fantasies, though. You cry so much now, Riv. I don't want you to cry."
I closed my eyes as my vision blurred from the weight of them, burdened by the false warmth of his touch.
"I've lost myself just as much as I've lost you," I whispered, trying to memorize the feeling of his soft hands against my skin. So caring and loving when everything seemed so cold now. "All my dreams are shattered without you."
Bobby's hands reached for my face, turning it, so I was looking at him. He was beginning to waiver in and out, and panic burned its way up my throat.
He was going to leave.
But this was so real.
"Please don't leave," I said, and the tears and clenching of my throat made the words as physically painful as they were emotional.
"I thought all my dreams shattered when I found out Adam was with you--and it was over for me--that I didn't have any more chances. My dreams realigned, though, Riv--they changed, refit into even better dreams. I expect you to do the same," he said, and he was fading faster; his body just a wisp and his touch a mere warmth with nothing substantial behind it.
"But Adam--"
"You'll figure out what to do, it might be hard, but in the end, it will work out. You and him are what's left of me. Remember that. Together you make me whole," he said, and his lips reached for my cheek, sending heat through my body as he disappeared.
"Bobby!" I yelled, and suddenly I was sitting straight up in the bed sobbing, the warmth of his lips against my cheek a stinging pain. I leaned back, pulling my knees to my chest and cried until the darkness consumed me.
This time, Bobby's warmth didn't return.
Cassandra doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t writing. In fact, the first time she was published was when she was seven years old and won a contest to be published in an American Girl Doll novel. Since then Cassandra has written more novels than she can count and put just as many in the circular bin. Her personal goal with her writing is to show the reader the character’s stories through their dialogue and actions instead of just telling the reader what is happening. Besides being a writer, Cassandra is a professional photographer known for her automotive, nature and architectural shots. She is happily married to the man of her dreams and they live in the rolling hills of New England with their dogs, Bubski and Kanga.

The drive back didn’t take long. They drove through the streets of Little Italy in downtown San Diego until they reached their final destination: Mitch’s penthouse.
It was stunning. Three hundred and sixty-degree views of the San Diego Bay and even some distant mountains greeted them. The thought crossed her mind that the space had been professionally designed. It was decorated in various shades of grey, black and white, with a pop of lime to add color. The living room was beautiful. It wasn’t too masculine, or feminine. It struck the perfect balance. Beyond the glass walls was a stunning balcony enclosed with glass railings that allowed unobstructed views.
Mitch gave her a quick tour of the master and two guest bedrooms, along with the den and study—all exquisitely decorated—as were the open living and kitchen area.
Soon the music of Yanni filled the air, followed by the scents of garlic and seafood.
“What’s on the menu tonight?” Chella asked, eager to help with the extras that needed to be done in the kitchen.
“Red Snapper in a cheese and garlic sauce, mashed potatoes or white rice, and for dessert, I have a fresh apple pie in the oven.”
“Sounds so good, I can’t wait to dig in. Is there anything you need me to do? I don’t cook much, but I set a great table.” “Sure. Set up anywhere you’d like to eat. There’s a bottle of Fumé Blanc in the wine chiller. We can have that with dinner.” “I’ve selected everything. They’re right there behind you on the counter. Go ahead. I’m following you with the goodies.” Dinner was fantastic. Chella had not enjoyed a meal like that in a long time. Dessert was even better. After clearing the dishes and tidying the kitchen, the two sat on a plush shag rug in front of the big screen TV, partially watching the Bond movie that was on, but mostly talking. Wine-tasting-notes“This is really beautiful. Thanks for having me here.” “It’s been a pleasure. Thanks for accepting my invitation. Paul and Jason were wrong about you.” Intrigued by his response, she smiled. “Why? What did they say? I didn’t know they had discussed me with you, or anyone else for that matter.” “They said you’re a great person, but in all the time they’ve known you, you’re usually solo with maybe two or three exceptions they can remember.” “That’s true. And exactly when did you have this conversation about me?” “Truth is, they mentioned you about a week ago. They said they’d introduce us sometime. I just didn’t know it would be under the circumstances we met last night.” “Okay.” “So tell me—why is a beautiful woman like you usually solo?” “I’m a little apprehensive about people, especially the opposite sex,” she replied, a little surprised that she was actually able to admit that to him. “Really? You’re here with me.” “I figured a friend of Paul and Jason couldn’t be so bad.” “Is that so?” he replied with a curious smile. Okay, change of topic. “Who taught you to cook like that? Dinner was amazing.” “Well, my mom always said that good food was a way to a woman’s heart.” “Do you cook for lots of women?” Chella said, flashing the type of smile that could allow her to get away with murder. “A few,” he answered. A few? Yeah, right. “I’m putting you on the spot, aren’t I? I like honesty, no matter how much it might hurt.” “No, you’re not putting me on the spot. It’s the first in a long time and the first here in San Diego. Let’s just say that I’ve done my fair share of dinners.” “And women, too.” Wow! We’re getting mighty brave… “Does that bother you?” “Not particularly. I guess you wouldn’t be a man if you hadn’t gone through that stage in your life.” “Do you always have such a high opinion of the male species?” Mitch asked, somewhat sarcastic. “Not particularly. We just have to take responsibility for the decisions we make as adults, and be honest about it, to ourselves and to the parties involved.” “Well, can I be honest with you about something?” “Always.” “I like you, Chella. I like you a lot, and right now I’d really like to kiss you.” She was shocked by his statement. Unable to respond, she looked away, flushed. Mitch did not give her a chance to respond. Cupping her face in his hands, he kissed her deeply on the lips and pulled her into his arms. However taken aback Chella might have been, it did not show, for she responded with just as much intensity and passion. She drew him closer. Her hand roamed over his chest and his neck. She felt his awesome body beneath the light sweater he wore. His kisses were sweet and her body ached for more, but her mind would not allow her to continue with what her heart desired. Fears rushed in. She remembered her past, her ex, Aaron. She couldn’t allow herself to get involved with another man on this level, not even after ten years. She couldn’t subject herself to that sort of pain, not now, not ever. Aaron was responsible for her not being able to have kids, and she still had the emotional scars to prove it. Letting another man in would open painful wounds, and she just wasn’t ready for that. Chella pulled away. “This can’t happen. I can’t get involved with you, or anyone. I’m sorry.” She didn’t wait for him to respond but began collecting her things to leave. “Look, Chella, I’m sorry if I came on too strong. I apologize, but let’s talk about this. Please, let’s not end the night like this.” “I’m sorry, too, Mitch. I promise you did absolutely nothing wrong, but I must go. We’ll talk another time.” Flustered, she scrambled out the door, took the elevator down, and caught a cab as she exited the main entrance. Through the taxi’s back window, she saw Mitch run out of the lobby in an effort to stop her but stopped short as he watched her drive away. He was too late. Into The Blue—It’s Not Always Hearts And Flowers…“What women?” Chella asked after Mitch had put down the phone. “Chella, it’s nothing you need to worry about.” “You’re keeping something from me that involve other women, and it’s nothing? I specifically asked you when we started seeing each other if there were any women in your life I needed to be concerned about, and you said no.” “It’s not what you think.” “Then why don’t you enlighten me?” He sighed, his glare piercing, then stood and brushed past her. “This is not something I can talk to you about right now.” “Why? According to you it would complicate things for us, but you don’t want to tell me what it is,” she said, following him into the kitchen. “It would complicate things for me, not us.” “You’re smarter than that. Whatever affects you affects me and vice-versa.” “This involves other people and things I can’t talk about yet.” “I get it. This trust thing between us is one-sided,” Chella snapped. “I’m supposed to share with you my deepest fears and thoughts, but you get to keep everything to yourself.” “That’s not how it is.” “Really? First, you lie to me about other women in your life, and then you tell me you can’t trust me.” “I never lied to you about anything.” “Mitch if things in this relationship are one-sided then what’s the point?” He stopped what he was doing in the kitchen and walked over to her, placing his hands on her shoulders. “Chella, I’m asking you to please trust me.” “Mitch, how do you think it makes me feel to know we’re in a relationship and you don’t trust me?” “I do trust you. This involves very sensitive information about other people, and I have to think carefully about how I handle things first before I say anything. Trust me, please.” “The last time someone said that to me, we all know how that ended,” she said, pulling away from him. “Don’t you dare compare me to that psychotic bastard,” he shouted. “Fine. I guess I have no choice, do I? I’m going to get some work done.” She walked into the guest room and slammed the door behind her. Onto The Dark Side…Jade went to her desk and returned with a package. “Tiffany from reception signed for this while we were in our meeting.” “Thanks,” Chella replied, taking the box from Jade and putting it directly in front of her on her desk. Chella smiled when she saw the return label from Mitch’s office, the same type of label that had stuck to her rear end that steamy hot afternoon at his office months before. She shook the box gently to see if she’d get a clue as to what was inside. It’s not jewelry… it’s too heavy. She tore the tape from the cardboard box. Inside was a gift box, covered in beautiful red fabric. Excited and eager to know what mischief Mitch had been up to, she pulled away the tissue paper covering its contents. Blood. Excerpt
They say moments of clarity hit you hard. Like suddenly a deep understanding smacks you in the face. Your vision becomes unclouded, and a truth thatâs been out of your reach rushes at you. Itâs in that second your perception of reality becomes so clear you canât begin to describe it. Some call it beautiful, some say it can be saddening, some even compare it to the moment your drug of choice washes over you, offering a moment of escape. I wish I could I say my moment of clarity is an epiphany or some kind of life-defining moment that showed me where my messed-up life is going. No, my moment hits me as the first wave of the orgasm Iâve been chasing the last few minutes washes over me. âFuck, woman, wait for me this time.â His voice pulls me from my haze first, reminding me how messed up I am. Heat covers my body, not from the life-altering orgasm, but from embarrassment. Without thinking rationally, I throw my vibrator to the floor and freeze, afraid to move, as a low moan pauses on my lips. The thump of my beating heart, almost syncing in perfect rhythm to the throb drumming between my legs. Jesus, please tell me he didnât hear me. âDonât go shy on me now, babe.â He half chuckles, half growls, and even though there is a wall between us, the words wash over me; Goose bumps prickle my skin as if his warm breath whispered over me. Shit. Shit. Shit. Slowly, as if by some freak of nature, apartment nine can see me through the wall, I roll off the bed and find myself on all fours. Really, Liberty? Fully committed to my actions, I slowly army crawl my way to the nearest exit. A strong tap on the wall halts my escape followed by, âYou still there?â Another wave of humiliation crashes over me when I take stock of my predicament. If I donât get out of here fast, Iâll be drowning in so much embarrassment, nothing will resuscitate me. Unable to form a coherent thought, and not willing to engage with the pervert, I continue to low crawl my way out of my bedroom and into my bathroom. Closing the door, I stand, and quickly walk to the shower. After turning the faucet on, I strip the rest of my clothes off, then step under the spray of the water. Jesus, that was close. I have no idea what I was thinking. In fact, I know I wasnât. Which scares me even more. I, Liberty Jenson, would never take risks like this. If asked what prompted this change in me, Iâd answer with two things. Apartment nine. And a self-appointed sex sabbatical. It all started when I moved into my new apartment. At first, I was excited, ready for a fresh start. After a messy break-up, which included dealing with a douche ex who didnât know how to keep his dick in his pants, I needed a new place. Somewhere closer to town this time, secure, and most importantly, affordable. However, finding a place close to the city, which was secure enough to make me feel safe and would still leave me enough money left over from my program directorâs wage, proved to be a feat. After searching for five weeks, I was about to give up, accept defeat and move in with my mom and dad again. I mean it wasnât the worst thing that could happen to a single thirty-year-old woman. Right? Luckily for me, I didnât have to resort to such desperate measures when this place came up two weeks ago. After a quick walk through, I fell in love with the two bedrooms, one bath, and open kitchen living area. I filled out the paperwork, paid my deposit, a monthâs rent in advance, and moved in five days later. Everything seemed perfect. That was until I realized how paper-thin the walls were between apartments. It started out subtle, a sneeze in the early evening on my first night here as I settled into bed. A soft murmur of a manâs voice the third night. But then came the sex. The hot, wild, filthy sex. The fourth night in my new apartment, I was woken to the low moans of what I assumed to be a needy woman. My face heats up remembering the screams, the grunts. The deep baritone of apartment nineâs voice as he told the âbitchâ to keep it quiet. Unsure what to do, I laid silent, listening to my new neighbor fuck some lucky woman into submission. Iâm not going to lie; I wasnât turned on by it. I was set alight. I never thought I would be that kind of person, the kind who got off from listening in on someone get off, but something in the way he spoke to her, something in the way he spoke to all the other women since, stirred a new want in me. Soon I found myself seeking out my room for a chance to hear him. It was wrong. So wrong. But it didnât stop me from wanting it. The screams. The deep grunts of pleasure. I wanted it all. I wanted it to be me. âIâm officially going to hell.â I groan under the water, trying to wash the stupidity off me. Stupid would be the nice way of calling me a fucking idiot. And an idiot is what I am. Especially after tonight.
